We Are Unique

What does it mean to be UNIQUE?

A large part of our Social Studies curriculum in Kindergarten is learning and understanding what it means to be unique. Students are beginning to demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the multiple social, physical, cultural and linguistic factors that contribute to an individual's unique identity. We have read several stories that discuss the importance of being different. For example "It's Okay to Be Different" and "Be Who You Are" by Todd Parr, "Only One You" and "You Be You" by Linda Kranz, "Chrysanthemum" by Kevin Henkes and "I Like Myself" by . We brainstormed things about ourselves that are different and make us special. Through discussions with our peers we have begun to realize that we all have similarities and differences in a lot of areas in our lives.

Students presented 4 artifacts from home during our All About Me Bag presentations. These items helped tell our peers a little bit about us and some of us told stories about why we chose those items. During our All About Me Bags presentations we learned the names of our classmates and several of their interests. Some students agreed with and identified that they also share similar interests. Some students realized their interests were different than their peers. Overall, we learned that not everyone shares the same gifts, talents and characteristics and it's okay to be different! It makes us UNIQUE!

Students have been reflecting on themselves and their individual characteristics in terms of how we look. We have been creating several types of self-portraits to show our understanding of our uniqueness.

Which type of self-portrait is my favourite and why? Which one did I enjoy creating the most and why?
